I-9 Wackiness

Below are instructions and the steps you need to take to complete your Form I-9.
Federal law requires a completed Form I-9 for all employees working in the United States, hired on or after November 7th, 1986. The Form I-9 establishes identity and employment authorization. The Form I-9 may be completed prior to the official start date, but must be completed within three business days of the date employment begins.

Section 1 (Employee)
Login to I-9 Advantage and complete Section 1 of the Form I-9 using the link and PIN below. After completing Section 1, you will need to select the documents you will be presenting to the Authorized Agent.

You will be prompted to upload a copy of the document(s) that you will be presenting to the Agent. Depending upon the device used:
You may take a picture of the document and attach.
Scan a copy to your desktop.
Or, certain mobile devices will allow you to "Take Picture Now" when you choose the file to be selected.
After completing Section 1, you will be prompted to enter the name and email of your Authorized Agent. (If you have not yet identified an Agent you must choose "cancel and complete later".)
Once you identify your Agent, and have their name, address, phone number and email address, you may log back in using the same link and PIN noted above and you will be directed to the section to enter the Agent’s information. Click "continue" and your Agent will receive an email with a unique password to complete Section 2 of your Form I-9.
NOTE: Take only original, unexpired documents to your meeting with the Agent.

So let me get this straight. Instead of bringing my ID(s) to my employer for them to photocopy and filling out a form, I:
1) use modern technology to scan these items myself and send them to a third-party company I have not chosen and know nothing about via the internet
But then also:
2) find my own agent myself
3) ask them to certify the real documents for free
4) give this same third-party company my agent's contact information
Isn't this all crazy? Why would I want to do this?
(Also, this is a company I have worked at over many years, though not recently.)
(Also, how much are they paying this third party company so that I can do everything myself?)
Googling I-9 Advantage, it is clear that they think they are providing the valuable service of interpreting 75 pages of instructions on how to fill out that form which, now that the government is targeting immigrants by thoroughly auditing these forms, saves the companies from getting in serious trouble.
