Throwing Parties and Cleaning
Apr. 26th, 2005 04:40 pmProblem: The house is too messy to invite anyone over, but you'd like to throw a party.
Which solution is better?
Solution 1: First clean the house. Then plan the party.
The problem with this plan is that it may be several years before you throw another party. Not that I know anything about this.
Solution 2: First send out the invitations. Then you have no choice but to clean the house.
The first problem with this plan is that in your haste, you might make the problem worse by dumping things into boxes using inadvisable sorting methods. Methods that might cause you to use labels such as "stuff I found under the end table" (were you to label your boxes). And then you might stuff the boxes into closets, transforming the closets from handy storage areas into nightmarish rooms of exploding junk.
The second problem is that you might inadvertently end up with party activities for your guests such as: Vacuuming. Prying the stuck glove out of the months-clogged vacuum cleaner, then vacuuming. Grocery shopping. Making an exchange to get the right part for your party-sized table, then adjusting the part to force it to fit, then putting the table together. Shopping for an extra matching tablecloth.
What is your vote?
I used to like to plan house-warming parties for one month after the move, but I haven't moved in nine years. Lately I've been getting paranoid and just putting off the parties. I'm hoping for solution 3: Become the kind of household who always has a respectably neat house. With some re-vamped organization plans, it could work.
