Record-breaking high temperatures (upper 90s) are making me look forward to some cool New England weather. And they are making me think about blender meals.
I haven't found the perfect smoothie recipe yet, so I just throw things together in the blender and it usually turns out pretty good. Here's what I use:
* 1 banana (helps ensure good texture)
* frozen fruit, probably about a cup--I like strawberries, raspberries, or mixed berries best so far (the worst-tasting but most nutritious ingredient)
* thick dairy products, if available (such as yogurt or, ahem, ice cream) (more important if you only have non-frozen fruit)
* 2 spoons of sugar (one if there's ice cream in there) (with no sugar, I just don't like it at all)
* milk (enough to make it about 12 ounces)
Then turn the blender on. Once it looks like a smoothie, keep it on just as long again and you'll get rid of most of those hidden chunks of frozen fruit.
This is a great way to use up leftover fruit and dairy products. Juice, buttermilk, or cottage cheese would probably also be fine ingredients. Sometimes a little sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg is nice.
If you have any advice about smoothies, please comment!
