More Trip Planning
May. 18th, 2006 06:32 pmYesterday I looked up thrift stores in Burlington, Vermont. And hotels.
I thought a little bit about camping. In the olden days, all my vacations like this involved camping (so cheap!), but they also involved transportation by car. However, this time I will be flying. It's not so easy to bring a sleeping bag and a tent on an airplane. Not to mention those other little things you end up wanting like a flashlight and a hammer. It occurred to me that I could try to pack these things in checked baggage, and then if they lost it, then I would go the hotel route instead.
But then it occurred to me that it will also feel cold to me there. With highs in the 60s (19C) and lows in the 40s (12C), that's basically winter weather where I'm from. And it will probably rain most of the time, because it's spring, right? In short, I decided to wimp out and travel light.
I also read about a beautiful hike I've decided I want to take, the Sunset Ridge Trail up Mount Mansfield. It's 6.6 miles long with a 2700-foot gain and has awesome views at the top. I hope it is not still covered in snow at this time of year, but I will try it regardless.
I am planning a surprisingly small amount for this trip. As if I will just show up and walk around and magically find interesting things to do.
On the other hand, I was looking at a map of Burlington. And there are all these pricey hotels in the downtown area by the lake. And all the cheaper hotels are beyond the other side of town near the airport. But it's still only two miles from downtown?! I'm not going to assume the entire town is walkable from any point, but I am going to assume it's a whole different kind of place than I'm used to, having been raised in suburbs. And if I get bored, I will have tour books, the internet, and tourist centers available to me.
