Today I saw a smallest, coolest apartment entry that let you see how they store their stuff. Lucy's Love Shack is a 371 square-foot apartment where two people and a dog live. Unbelievable! And it looks a lot like my house (when mine is clean): light walls, lots of wooden shelves, some framed art on the walls, some interesting knick knacks, and generally a warm but modern (fifties, straight lines, lack of frou-frou) look. We have fewer neutrals and more rich colors in the textiles (couch, bed). If this place had a coffee table, I could imagine living there.

Except they deliberately don't have a coffee table because they think it will just collect junk. And they've deliberately left their storage open to force them to keep their stored things neat.

When they moved in there were no closets at all. So they built floor-to-ceiling shelving to accommodate their exact stuff along one long wall to serve as their closet and pantry. And then they aimed the camera down that wall.

Indigo Rose was telling me about a room she lived in where basically the top floor was a bed and the bottom floor was the space under the bed. Robin told me about a small trailer he lived in. My mom has told me about a house where you can take a shower, wash your hands at the sink and use the toilet all at the same time--Robin says boats have these, too, but around here there's a law that you have to have at least one bathtub. My parents also once had the coolest hidden bed I've heard of. You pull it out like a drawer from under a walk-in closet that has two steps leading up to it.

Then I was remembering that I used to be able to pack much of what I had in four suitcases and two trunks. Except for some summer clothes, books, and toys at my parents' house. And I once moved everything I owned (nothing remained at my parents') in two carloads. Those days are over now. I enjoy having furniture. Some of the rest really needs to be re-evaluated, though.

I sort of like the philosophy that if I don't feel like lovingly looking through, dusting, or otherwise experiencing everything I own at least once a year, then maybe I shouldn't own it. Even references. With the internet as well as libraries, maybe I just don't need that many reference books anymore.

And do I really need to save extra clothing in my size that won't fit in my dresser and closet? In case of what? Another Great Depression? It's happened before, and it could happen again. Only I don't think that there would be a shortage of clothing during this one. Food would be the problem. We don't even know how to grow it anymore, even if we had seeds and eggs and whatnot, which we don't.

Anyway, I'm getting all rambly, when I should be cleaning because Robin invited a friend over to help him with some work questions tomorrow. Ta!
