Local Environmental Groups

livingdebI've been doing a little research since attending the coral reef presentation earlier this month. One source I found recommends supporting local clean-up efforts at least as much as supporting large environmental groups because the former can be very effective.
In the past my monetary support has been for large groups like the Nature Conservancy. I like how instead of just educating people, they actually do things. And I like how instead of begging politicians for money or going around suing people, they just buy land. They do research to find environmentally pivotal areas and focus their efforts there.
Also they work with landowners who are doing a good job to both encourage them to continue and to learn from them.
They are preventing damage, but they're not reversing it (that I know of). So I've decided to research smaller groups, but that's not so easy.
When I think about local environmental groups in my area, I think of the Save Our Springs Alliance. I don't know much about them, sadly, and I'm not sure it isn't more important to support clean-up efforts elsewhere.
Small organizations aren't as easy to find as large ones. And you can read the PR that different organizations put out, but can you trust it? Some web sites check out the money flow of these places, but it's not so easy to see what is actually being done.
So, do any of you, my lovely readers, have any environmental organizations you support (anywhere in the world)? If so, please let me know, and tell me why you like them.
