Last night I got to walk around the Riverwalk area with a group of total strangers who invited me along. (I did this instead of editing, spell checking and uploading my entry, and because of that and technical difficulties delaying the previous day's entry, my blog buddy gets a cookie.)
I learned that the place that makes its own root beer sells German food and is reasonably priced. I might even be able to find it next time I'm there. It's right next to Casa Rio, and you have to take the steps up out of the Riverwalk to see it.
I saw a building built in the shape of a wedge instead of a rectangle, and I got to see it from the angle where it looks like just a single wall, soaring into the sky.
I like the way San Antonio is old enough that you get a variety of building styles. It feels like Europe to me in the Riverwalk area because it's so walkable and has interesting architecture, nice plantings, outside tables, decorated sidewalks, that sort of thing. Oh, and lots of brick rather than clapboard or glass, though there is a bit of glass, too.
One guy insisted on walking me back to my hotel afterwards for safety reasons. I said that I would then have to walk him back to his hotel for safety reasons, and we could get caught up in an endless loop. He insisted that it was much safer for him to walk alone than for me, and this morning he had evidence. On his way back, a car pulled up at a stop sign near where he was, and he heard them lock all their doors. Because they were afraid of him! One point for the large bearded man.
