Almost Missed It!

livingdebA while after I got my laptop, I started transferring personal files from my work computer to my home computer and stopped updating them at work.
Unfortunately, I'm not updating them at home much, either. So today, I looked at my old list of things I wanted to do this year to see if I could check off any of the career-related things. No, not really. However, the list did remind me about wanting to join the Texas Distance Learning Association and the United States Distance Learning Association and to attend the Texas Distance Learning Association Conference and to register for the conference before February 11 to get the discount. Oops.
I asked for time off and got it.
I then registered, which automatically signed me up for the state and national associations. And the conference is next week!
The conference is in San Antonio, which, if you look on a map of the US, you can see is right next door to Austin. So it's a no-brainer that I should go to this conference.
But it's not quite next door in the way a suburb would be; it's a 1.5-hour drive each way, worse during rush hour, and the conference is in some giant hotel downtown, right on the Riverwalk, which means parking is tight and expensive, and which means who knows if I'll ever find it.
The hotels are over $150/night. So I think I'll commute daily. Of course, I could try to check out cheaper nearby hotels, though I don't have much time. My sister mentioned that there are good coupons for La Quinta in the coupon books we got for the holidays and recommends that I check them out.
Amtrak costs $11 each way but is a three-hour ride, and very poorly timed (I'd have to stay two extra days!). Not interested.
Greyhound costs $29 round-trip, but takes only 1.5 to 2 hours, and has a wide variety of choices. However, it still seems risky. I've never ridden Greyhound before; I don't know if they're usually sold out, late, crowded, smelly, or what.
Parking at the hotel costs $14 per day.
My car is overheating again; Robin's got ideas on how to fix it. If it's fixed in time, I might drive. Otherwise, I was thinking I'd rent a car, but maybe I'll also look into Greyhound some more--make sure the stations are in good locations for me, and call and ask for advice.
The idea of three hours of total commuting time (not counting getting lost, looking for parking, and getting from parking to the site), is tiring just thinking about it, especially when combined with any stress of trying to get somewhere by a certain time.
So, I started looking at the conference sessions, which normally I enjoy drooling over in anticipation. But with my brain in panic last-minute mode, it was just glazing over the descriptions. I hope to get in some good quality anticipation time soon.
Sleepy now, though. I went out to eat with my sister and then we watched two more episodes of "Firefly."

on 2006-03-08 08:29 pm (UTC)I ended up at a Travelodge about seven blocks from the bus station for about that same rate.
Taking the bus worked perfectly for me for this trip, and I might not have seriously considered it if you hadn't shared your thoughts. So thanks again!
