Vision Correction

It's nice to be able to see things clearly again.

My new lenses are not very tall, so I can easily look under them when I'm reading something (unless it's on a shelf at or above eye-level). This is nice, kind of like free bifocals.

Why do they only correct your vision to 20/20? That's so mediocre. I wish glasses would let me see as well as I could when I was a kid. I used to beat everyone except sometimes my dad in contests to read things as soon as possible as we approached them. Still, having these glasses is better than what I have naturally these days. And fortunately no one assumes you're in league with the devil if they see you wearing glasses anymore, like they used to in the Middle Ages. For these things I am grateful.

Appearance

No one has made any remarks about my new glasses (besides at the glasses store). This implies that the new glasses are not fabulously better looking or more becoming than my old ones. However, it's nice not to have people telling me that finally I look like a decent human being (not in those words exactly), like some people do after you make a change.

The lack of comments also implies that they don't look worse than my other glasses, because I do hang around plenty of people who say things like "How interesting that you wear corduroy pants to work."

Weight

I've decided the new glasses weigh only about half as much as my old ones, which is amazing, but they still weigh too much for all-day wear.

Side-effects

Since these glasses are frameless, I get little rainbows along the edges sometimes. I think they're pretty. But I also sometimes get extra images along the edges. This is disconcerting when I'm driving and think I'm seeing brake lights suddenly going on when actually it's only that my glasses are suddenly reflecting some other red lights.

Edited to add that when someone else is driving me around at night, it's fun to find that angle where everything reflects in the bottom edges of my glasses. It's like a little show as the lights go by. The best are the street lights which make whole rainbows of color. Headlights make less intense rainbows. Tail lights and traffic signals are mostly just one color, although I did see one green light that split into yellow, green, and blue.

So I guess I can use my glasses to quickly measure the lightwave range of various kinds of lights. Which wouldn't help you decide what to buy in stores because those light bulbs are always turned off and coddled in packages. Oh well. It's still good fun in the car at night.

You know another oddly amusing thing to do in the car, especially if you're in the back seat with someone else who's in the mood for mild amusement, and with a driver who doesn't mind some giggling, is to lean your head back against the head rest and then just completely relax your neck muscles. Just let your head move from side to side when the car turns. Even the smallest direction changes can lead to dramatic head movements.

Ha! I know just what you mean about the backhanded compliments. "Oh, that's such a great haircut! So flattering on you! You really look GREAT!" Which means "THANK GOD you finally tamed that rat's nest on your head."

I used to notice the edge-of-my-glasses weird light effect, but I must have adapted because that's gone away. I wear mine all day, though.

When I first got glasses (sometime in my 20s) I thought I was going to DIE having to WEAR them on my NOSE ALL DAY! It was too much, I thought, too heavy! But I got used to that too. Do you suppose noses get callouses? I also found the strain above my ears was headache inducing and just hideous. But apparently my head is one big leathery thing now, because I never feel them at all anymore.

I don't think it's that easy to compliment someone without implying something negative about how they were before. "That haircut's even cooler than your last one," perhaps?

Hmm, so you have the dainty ears the way I have a dainty nose. It's good to know that the body can just get used to things like this.
