Musical Cubicles
Jan. 4th, 2006 10:39 pmNormally during breaks at the university where I work (when most campus shuttles are no longer running) I take the city bus near my house (#37) and then walk a mile or so the rest of the way. And coming home I take the bus near my job (#7) and then walk a mile or so to get home.
This morning I just missed the #37, so I decided to walk to the other bus, which I also just missed.
Next time, must jog some.

At work I am preparing to move to the new renovated space.
My new cube is bigger and taller than my current cube and also has a window. I've never worked in a cubicle with a window before. I even have a vent and a knob to control the airflow. This could be very dangerous. I'm the type to always be cold, so if it were up to me, I'd just turn it off. I'd know to turn it back on when the armpit smell got to my cube. No?
I'm going to try to find out the recommended default setting or whatever. I hate when people make everyone uncomfortable so that their own tiny space is perfect for them.
The bad part is that my new cube has only two shelf modules, which is a name I made up for when the shelf is shaped kind of like a very wide bread box, and the door lifts up from the bottom and then slides back across the top of the box. The good part is that you can keep the unsightly things hidden and that this cuts down on dust. The bad thing is that you can't put anything on the top shelf. Well, you can, but then you can never slide the lid back, so you have to be able to get to whatever you want with one hand while you're using your other hand to hold the lid up, like with an old hatchback. Because holding the lid up with your foot or even your head is unprofessional.
My new shelf modules are pretty wide, but my current cube has one just as wide and two sets of two that each add up to being just as wide, plus an inbox, outbox, ordinary shelf, and interesting serrated shelf for holding file folders. I do have one extra file drawer, so that should help, but overall there's a lot less storage space.
I've heard various rumors about them not being done adding the storage, and then about us getting more storage after we move in and know what we want. Yeah, right. I've decided to assume that what I see is what I get. So it's time to do some purging. It's good to purge things once every five years, you know?
I started with the stack of publications that I have never looked at once the whole five years I've been there. I vaguely remember my old boss saying that they were being stored there for my old boss-of-boss. So I handed them over to my current boss-of-boss. She had plenty of room--two whole empty shelves of a bookcase (and it took up less than one-fourth of that space). My favorite publication was about how to protect yourself from nuclear attack and tornadoes. (Get under your desk? I admit, I didn't look inside.)
Think of the irony had a nuclear bomb or tornado struck, with my not knowing that the keys to my safety were right in my own cabinet.
I also decided that I don't need to have a large archive of catalogs and schedules. I generally use only the most recent ones, and there is a historical set of everything for those occasions when I do need to look into an older tome. So I put a stack of volumes at least two feet high out to recycle.
I also cleared away some slightly less easy-to-toss items, and I wasn't using all the space anyway, so I now think I can fit everything into my new space without having too much stuff on my very, very spacious countertops. I can have plants! I can have a lamp!
I've only cleaned out my shelf modules. I even dusted them out (except for the last one, which will be easy). My current countertops look the same as always: a bit messy. I'll work on them some more tomorrow. Officially I'm moving starting at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. I guess it all depends on when the computer guy moves that over.

This evening Robin and I watched the movie "The Island" with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. Robin read a review that said something like the first half was a creepy, interesting sci fi movie and the second half was a regular action movie. And this was true. So if you're in the mood for a double-feature that you can easily fit into one evening, I recommend this movie.
Probably most people will have issues with something in the movie. Mine were the violence and the storing-experiences-in-your-genes problem. Also, if you're going to spend a whole scene emphasizing a certain level of skill or power or ambition or ignorance that a character has, you really shouldn't make just the opposite be true to move the plot along. It's not the best route to suspension of disbelief!
But then it's still fun to try to guess what's real and what's not and who knows what and what's really going on and what's going to happen next. Also, Scarlett Johansson looks like a typical action star in this movie, which is very odd, so that was an interesting distraction, too.
