2018

Last year I had two resolutions and I failed both of them fairly misearably. I still had a lovely year, so I don't mind too much.

Exercise

I exercised only on-and-off rather than regularly.

The best part was going to the ropes course at a local water park every week with a friend. We both got seasons passes for this coming summer, too. I improved over the summer, but I'm not sure if it's because my strength and balance improved or just because I got more familiar with the course and reduced my fears.

Robin and I also tried out a couple of new-to-us ballroom dance instructors, and while one of them was probably the worst instructor I've ever had (sexist, egotistical, and bordering on verbally abusive), I found the other one minimally acceptable (which, sadly, is a huge compliment), so we've started up lessons again and started doing more dancing, which I really like.

Cool Thing

I did not do any of the cool projects I had hoped I would. However I did get to take a nice trip to Mexico with lots of my relatives, which is something I never would have guessed was in my future. Some of these are people I rarely see (and like), so it was really nice. Plus it was a beautiful and interesting place.

Since I was in the Yucatan, I also took the opportunity to read a lot about the Maya, which I've been wanting to do. They had multiple very accurate calendars. They independently invented the zero, so their (base 20) math was much easier than with Roman numerals. They did amazing architectural work with large stone blocks. They developed farming techniques so efficient that they could support populations considered dense even by modern standards. And I'm so glad I didn't live then. They felt that blood was sacred and self-mutilation pleased the gods. And sacrificing others. Eventually they adopted many of the extreme sacrificial practices from other parts of Central America, including those of the Aztecs that so freaked out the Spaniards.

Continuing Earlier Trends

I did succeed in continuing doing the things I said I wanted to continue doing: I kept donating blood with R regularly, I signed a whole bunch of petitions, and I read lots of books and saw movies about and/or located in different countries.

2019

For this year, I'm going to be pretty vague. Let's just say I want to get more organized, build more systems. I have a lot of specific ideas on where to go with that, but I don't want to spell them out at this time. At the end of the year I'll tell you which ones, if any, worked out.
