A to Z Challenge: Lost

livingdebToday for my daily exercise, I decided to check out this month's Yard of the Month in my neighborhood. It is located in a part of the neighborhood to which I've never been, so I plotted out a route to get there and a different one to get back, for variety.
I found the place with no problems. Coming back, I noticed at one point that I was no longer on the street I expected to be on, but instead one of the streets I had used briefly on my route to the house. Fortunately, it was fairly clear which direction to go in order to return the way I came, so I got home fine.
Interestingly, right after I discovered my mistake, someone pulled over and asked me how to get somewhere. I told her that I also was lost, but I was also able to tell her a way to get where she was going that involved a U-turn. If she didn't make a U-turn, I could not make any guarantees because those roads curve and wind all over the place.
Coming home and checking on a full map (as opposed to the one I had drawn for myself), it seems clear I must have turned one street too soon. Weird.

on 2015-04-15 07:24 pm (UTC)One time I was driving home from a party, and the route I knew would have taken me a few blocks east, before heading north and west again to get home. So... I decided that there must be a more "direct route" if I simply went west. Ha! I somehow ended up on a street that curved around back to where it started... which I didn't realize. So when I reached what looked like a major north/south route, I turned right thinking I was going north. But, I was actually headed south instead. Oy! I ended up driving about 20 miles before I realized what I'd done. So much for my "direct route!" Good Gawd!

on 2015-04-16 02:31 am (UTC)I'm getting better at not getting so lost by paying more attention, though I'm probably still in the bottom 5 percentile. Or maybe not, definitely the bottom 10 percentile. But I think even people with good senses of direction would have a hard time winging it in many subdivisions.
Hmm, I guess if none of your streets go anywhere, then you don't have to add speed bumps to keep people out.
