Ice Day 2015

It was all so exciting. Temperatures were going below freezing and it was going to rain. This is a rare combination because generally cloud cover holds enough heat in to keep it above freezing. It's only when there are no clouds that it freezes.

I felt the first of the cold front arrive at 3:23 p.m. After that I stayed in. The public schools announced they would close all day. The community college and my old employer would be closed until 1:00.

It turned out that it didn't get below freezing until 4 a.m. by which time it had stopped raining. Also, since yesterday was so warm (I know it was at least 69 degrees at one point), the ground probably did not freeze very quickly. At our house, the road was just wet. Perhaps some overpasses froze and perhaps there was some freezing outside of town (all that concrete keeps us warm in town).

But it's all a little embarrassing. At least my Spanish class wasn't canceled--it's not until 6 p.m. During which there will be a quiz over all the food and drink terms in chapter 8. So there's still a little excitement ahead.

Freezing + precipitation can = snow or sleet or maybe it's not freezing until the last few feet and so it's still rain. But then it hits the frozen ground and freezes. Or it rains first, then the part that has not yet drained away or evaporated freezes into lovely sheets of ice.

I also don't understand how snow works. Or hail. They are both magical to me. We are actually better at the hail magic than the snow magic around here.
