New mini-job

One of the colleges at my former employer has been courting me for a possible part-time temp job. One of their advisers is out for several months, and they thought I might be able to come in and get one of their catalogs moved from the old degree audit to the new one and do overrides so that their remaining advisers could focus on advising.

That sounded good to me, but then they presented me with a long list of job duties they were thinking of hiring for. As I read the job duties, I told them what I thought. It went something like this:
* boring
* boring and frustrating
* fun
* boring and frustrating
* boring
* fun
* boring
"Nope, not interested."

Fast forward a couple of weeks and they came back to me saying that they got permission to split the duties into two jobs: a boring one and a degree-audit one. After a bit more negotiation, I get to start next week at 20 hours per week, no benefits. I will work until I am finished moving the degree plans over or until May 30, whichever comes first.

The pay is okay. It's less than I was making per hour before, even if you don't count the benefits and the longevity pay. But it's more than the lower end of the range for the job title I had before, which is a ridiculously high job title for someone who supervises a total of zero people. And I like all the people I've met from this college so far, so I don't mind giving them a beak. After taxes, it looks like it will cover about 79% of my current reduced living expenses, which is not bad for a half-time temp job, and it will let me push back the date when I need another real job significantly.

I love not being desperate for work. (Yet.)

I am actually looking forward to going back on these terms, though technically I'm going to a different place. I will now be just another chickadee instead of the mother hen, which will be more fun. And I will get to see the other chickadees at those weekly meetings that I used to dislike (because I had to plan them and to know everything and write down perfect notes on all the bugs) but which I will now like (because I will get to see everyone).

Also, I'm subversively planning to try to move over the university-wide rules to the new system, which I never had time to do in my old job because there was always something more urgent. Don't worry, I will use any subversive powers I get only for good.

Retirement stuff

Meanwhile I have been trying to deal with my voluntary retirement accounts. I have a pension, which I am leaving in place. But I also have some things that are sort of like 401Ks. I have a 403(b) at a place I decided I didn't like much that I want to roll over/convert into my Roth IRA at a better place. I have a Roth 403(b) at a place that I like fine, but it's not much, and I'd rather have it all in one place, so I want to roll that over, too. Then I also have a 457, which you're allowed to take distributions on as soon as you leave your job, even if you're not old yet. So I've been using that as an early retirement/sabbatical fund and I want to move that into my savings accounts.

Last time I was between UT jobs, I never got around to rolling over the 403(b) (the only one I had at that time), so this time I decided not to make the same mistake. And I even actually found and filled in and certified all the obnoxious paperwork. Yea, me!

However, none of those changes have gone through because my former and future employer showed me as currently employed, even as late as March 1, even though my last day was February 1. I waited a few days to make sure they didn't just fix up the records at the beginning of every month, and then e-mailed my HR rep today. She told me that I looked employed because I'm about to be employed next week. I know that paperwork for my future job wasn't sent in until March 5 at the earliest. But I didn't hassle her about that because she also offered to directly contact all the people that I want her to contact. So I gave her all the information I could think of, and we'll see how it goes.

Meanwhile, if things stay as they are now, deductions will automatically be made from my paychecks at the new job. Lovely, eh? Warning me of that was good call by my HR rep.

Cake of the Day

Here's another cake done by an adolescent:

That's pretty fun. I'm not sure when you'd need a FarmVille cake, but if you and all your friends were into it, it would be a nice silly birthday cake. And it looks easy to cut into pieces for eating. Yum!
