Lately I've been brainstorming ways to make money without having a full-time job. Here are some things I've done in the past:

* grocery store cashier
* college work/study jobs (life guard, building monitor, food service)
* tutored introductory statistics (college students)
* tutored math and reading (public school students)
* transcribed interviews for social workers
* scored teacher certification tests

Here are some other things I could try:
* write a book
* start a money-making blog
* create a game
* write articles
* grade papers for distance learning students
* teach math literacy to home-schooled students whose parents are afraid of math
* seasonal jobs (campus bookstores at the beginning of the semester, retail at Christmas, summer jobs)
* make stuff and sell it
* work some place with good discounts (not that I shop much)
* sell stock photos
* work events with Wendy when she comes into town

Yeah, mostly I made this entry to share some links with you.

Blog Entry of the Day - A Practical Way To Estimate And Budget For Home Maintenance Costs at Money Smarts Blog - "As a home owner, I’ve seen various methods of estimating annual home maintenance costs. These methods involve calculating a percentage of your home value – usually between one to four per cent, and using that value as the annual maintenance estimate. ... [A] problem with these estimates is that a poorly maintained, older home will be worth less and consequently have a lower estimated maintenance cost than a new, well-maintained house." I think that 1-2% rule of thumb is good for a ballpark estimate when you're first buying a house and are clueless (I've never seen a 4% estimate before reading this article!), but looking at your actual costs is very interesting, too. Of course you never really know how long things will last, and it's hard to realize just how many things can go wrong with a house, but this is a good second way to look at this issue.

Race of the Day - Run For Your Lives: A Zombie-Infested 5K Obstacle Race - coming soon to a city near you. The title says it all except for "flag." The zombies "eat your brains" by grabbing your flag-football-like flags. This is the most expensive 5K race I've ever noticed. Yet strangely enticing.
