Ramen Noodles

Even though I'm no longer a student and no longer poor, I still like ramen noodles. It's like chicken noodle soup, only with lots of extra noodles! I especially like them when I'm feeling chilly or sick or when I'm feeling thirsty but not in the mood for any drinks.
I used to use only half the flavor packet; then I started using double the water.
I wish there were a low-fat ramen noodle made from whole grains. Campbell's used to make a baked ramen noodle which had a different texture than regular ramen noodles, but was still good. They discontinued it.
I've tried various other things, but they all had flavors too strong for my wimpy tastes. I just like a nice salty broth reminiscent of chicken soup.
Now I eat Thai Kitchen Garlic & Vegetable Instant Rice Noodle Soup. Some is cooking right now! Like ramen noodles, it cooks in three minutes and has a weak, salty broth that's tasty. I may also like the other flavors; I haven't tried them yet. (I got this from Robin who said it was too boring for him. Of course I would never buy anything that claimed it was vegetable flavored!)
The bad news is that it costs more than ramen noodles, and you get less. The getting less part is probably okay, since I generally eat the whole thing in one sitting regardless. But too bad it's not 7 cents.
It comes with a seasoning packet and an oil packet. I don't use the oil packet--Robin uses it in cooking. If he didn't, I'd add it to the oil I use for making quiche crust--it has garlic and other spices in it. So, it's a nice light supper even though I eat the whole package.
Journal Entry of the Day: Have I made you hungry? You may enjoy sheenaqotj's Gnoshing, a poem about eating. "I eat when I'm happy/I eat when I'm sad/I eat when I'm cranky/I eat when I'm mad"

on 2005-10-27 09:43 am (UTC)Actually, I was reading this entry, with full intent of commenting. I have the same dilemma as you do. I'm not that concerned about the fat content (although I ought to be), but I was very disappointed to find out that it had beef seasoning even in its vegetable noodles. I also buy Thai Kitchen, mostly in those instant soup bowls that are outrageously expensive at $1.79+tax. I finished eating another soup brand about 30 minutes ago -- it was just a little cheaper -- but I probably don't recommend it.
