Here are the clues. What happened?

Thursday, ~8:00 am - notice small black spot on the knee of my pants, try to brush it off, it doesn't brush off. (Not lint.)

~10:00 am - co-worker in bathroom asks if I've seen the back of my pants. Apparently not. There are many black dots and smears in the seat area. They do not bush off. They do not come off with water. (So it's not charcoal dust.) Fortunately, I have no meetings, so I just tie a sweater around my waist for the rest of the day.

The placement implies I sat in something. At that point, I had sat in only two places all morning: the bus and my desk chair. I had not sat on the bench at the bus stop because I just paced while reading the whole time. My work chair is black.

Came home, washed pants with long soaking. Afterwards, they looked just the same. Except wet. (So it's not motor oil.)

Sprayed the entire area with spray and wash, let sit a few minutes, washed again by putting all the liquid detergent directly on the black parts and rubbing them together. Then more soaking and washing. Afterwards, they looked just the same, only very dark grey instead of black. (Is it ink?)

More investigating: There are no black dots on my coat or on my backpack. So it is unlikely that someone whipped their broken pen out and it splattered all over me. I must have sat in something and moved slightly, causing small smears.

I'm a little afraid to sit down now.

Anyone know if khakis take black dye well?

I don't think so. It looks like drops of varying sizes, most of which have become smeared. Like comets!
