Today my sister, niece and I went to the Austin Ice Cream Festival. Festivals are things that often sound like they will be fun but rarely are. However, sometimes they are fun. So we tried one today.

Here's what was available to do at 10:30 in the morning before it got too hot. Well, actually, it was already too hot, but not as hot as it was going to get. And it was an ice cream festival, after all.

* Pay $7 to park. (Except we found a spot on the street! For free! Ha!)
* Pay $5 to get in.
* See pretty cool Ice Cream Festival t-shirts for $15. Decide not to get one until we see if the festival is fun or not.
* Walk a gauntlet of seemingly unrelated hucksters such as for radio stations.
* Walk down a row of festival rides--notice that one of them costs two tickets and a ticket is a dollar. Do not go on any rides.
* Walk down a row of ice cream vendors. Most have a sample available for only one dollar as well as other more luxurious offerings.
* Hear free music that is overly loud and obnoxiously insists on audience participation.
* Wonder where the ice cream making contest is that we get to judge for free. Surely there is one of these. There is a contest (according to the web site) but we didn't see any evidence of this.

Who knew that a finding a free parking place at that time was actually a bad omen?

Fortunately my sister thought of the same plan B as I was thinking of and mentioned it first: go pay for ice cream someplace with air conditioning. We went to La Dolce Vita and had gelato. The fig is light and refreshing. Still, I went with the hazelnut peanut butter gelato over the dark chocolate gelato. But first we went to Mother's and had early lunch. Then we wandered around at a fabric store.

Web Entry of the Day - Today's offering is quite old, but my sister told me that a friend is thinking of having a spy-themed wedding, so I couldn't help think of the most awesome cake ever and for some reason she had never heard of it. So maybe some of you have never heard of it either. Wreck. Cake Wreck. Click on the picture to get a bigger one you can inspect more easily.
