When I'm hungry, I tend to go ahead and eat. Pretty much every time. (Unless I'm really involved in something.)

But when I'm sleepy, I prefer to put that off. Pretty much every night.

Why is that? They are both needs that feel so good to satisfy, especially when you wait a while. What's with the different strategies?

I now think I know. I can eat as the same time I'm doing other things. Which is why I eat all day at work. But I can't do other things while sleeping. Or I'd probably sleep all day at work, too.

Also eating is quicker. Once I go to bed, I don't get any more fun until the next day. I am giving up on fun for the day. Admitting that I have had enough. Eating just doesn't involve the same sorts of ridiculous declarations.

In other local news, it's the end of summer. After three months of almost solid supersummer (aka hellfires), we had two lovely weeks of regular summer. It felt good to be outside, and it was warm enough to wear shorts. The breeze felt delicious, not like blasts of bus exhaust. It was sunny and cheerful, not blinding and agonizing. Hammock weather.

Well, that's it. Two weeks. Today was autumn. It felt good to be outside, but not in shorts (unless I was exercising). I actually felt a little chilled. It took me most of the lunch hour hiking around campus to thaw out at lunch instead of the usual 10-15 minutes.

I like wearing sweaters, but I prefer t-shirts. (Actually, I do like hiking more than hammocks, but those aren't the only choices.) I hope we get some more summer before the end of the year because only two weeks of good summer is just not fair.
