Signs of the End Time
Sep. 11th, 2008 04:54 pmDisturbing: At my local state university, this Saturday's football game is being canceled "due to the impending landfall of Hurricane Ike." What is the world coming to? Wind and rain will be tough on football players? I guess the spectators might not be so tough. But human lives? More important than football? In Texas?
Reassuring: Both teams had a bye at the same time in a couple of weeks, so the game is merely being postponed until that time.
Disturbing: All parking garages (but one) at the university will be open and free all weekend long "and available for vehicular shelter relating to the potential impacts from Hurricane Ike." Free? But those aren't for parking, those are for collecting parking fees and, better yet, parking fines! Not being allowed to collect parking fines for a whole weekend? People will be having strokes.
Reassuring: "Unpermitted vehicles left in the garages after 7am [Monday morning] will start accruing the daily parking fees." Whew. The garages are just being transformed, for a brief period, into a collection tank for future fee charging.
(Addendum: on my usual Thursday shopping trip I was wondering why the shelves were so much emptier than usual. Right up until I got to the bread aisle, which was not quite stripped clean like those in Houston undoubtedly are. For some reason, before a big storm people suddenly feel the need to stock up on bread, water, peanut butter, and other staples. To be fair, a lot of folks are expecting guests from Houston this weekend. Of course, I suspect they won't be feeding their guests peanut butter sandwiches with water.)
Geographical note: The coast is 200 miles away.
Journal post of the day - Merle Sneed's Sand Trout, a short humorous piece about public art in his town. "Here in Hooterville, our motto when it comes to public art is, 'We don't need no stinkn' public art'."
