Wedding Cake Extraordinaire

I went to an old friend's wedding this weekend and saw one of the coolest wedding cakes ever!



Nope, not that one, though I can see why you might think that. Voluminous, elegant, and not overdone.

Actually, I meant this one:



It's not just an unusual cake made well. It's of course set up in an interesting way. Want to guess the significance of this set-up? (Hint: it's not a mate-in-three situation.)

The whole cake table was really nice.

Yep, that was the groom's cake. And yes, the chess pieces were edible. I didn't taste them, but I did taste the cake. That chocolate ganache on the top was awesome and was covering some white fluffy stuff that made me think of chocolate malt. Mmm. The actual cake was merely fine and thus above average for wedding cake.
