Today I had dinner with my sister. We walked over to the old airport, passing construction detritus, a taco cart, a roasted chicken cart, a lumpy path in the grass, and a concrete hull of a future Home Depot. The Star Flight helicopter flew over us three times. We shared a pizza and then each had our own dessert (lemon cake versus chocolate sour cream donut). Then we walked back the scenic route involving different construction, a Ronald McDonald House, a well-lit church, a park, and neighbor houses.

She was testing her shoes and declared them good.

At home we showed each other You Tube videos. And I realized I forgot to link to one of my favorite ones yesterday (see fraeuleinchen's entry about it, Freeze).

(Note to self: Must not, at work meetings, even after saying something very smart sounding, suddenly start waving my arms around, but only from the elbows down, and then break out into song, singing "Look at me! I'm white and nerdy!")

We ended our visit with an exchange of hugs and baklava. Okay, I admit it--we both got hugs, but only I got baklava.

Hilarious

I really loved the white and nerdy video. Now I want to watch all of the Weird Al videos.

What type of shoes were they? I am looking for some walking shoes.

They were flip-flops with leather uppers. Not the best walking shoes. But they were okay. They are replacing shoes that were falling apart, so in comparison, they were luxurious! (They were from Payless and she got brown and red and is hoping black will come in one day.)

I have a pair of sandals from Payless. They have worked well for a number of years. I have started buying mostly men's shoes from Payless if I want them to last any amount of time and the sandals were a lucky purchase. I need some new tennis or whatever they call them now.

I don't know what "they" call them, but I've decided that when I don't want to mention a particular sport, I just call them "sneakers." I still think of them as tennis shoes, though.

I think Weird Al only occasionally strikes gold. I really liked "Eat It" when I was in college and even got my mom the 45 because she spent so much of our youth trying to make us eat vegetables. Weird Al really captured that.

I just looked at a few of his other videos, and didn't really like any of them. There's something about "White and Nerdy." It could be a tragic song, where a guy can never make friends with his favorite people, but no, he's too enthusiastic and creative. I'm a nerd groupie, and it seems like Weird Al mostly captured that (though you wear a pocket protector to protect your shirt, not your pens, and real nerds are more likely to do program in C or C++ and Natural than in html and Javascript). Plus the tune is just so catchy. Plus how I like the way he makes nerdy people seem alien and even scary to cool, laid-back people.
