I remembered about toothpicks to get my pie to work. I slipped toothpicks in near the crust plus a few places in the middle to hold the plastic wrap up out of the fluff. This totally worked!

However, the meringue wasn't as good as it looked. It seemed too dense. I wonder if I should have whipped it more or if it really needs different sugar.

Also, there were some burnt parts on the crust. The person who told me this said it was no problem, she just scraped it off and voted for my pie anyway.

I will try this again sometime, though. The meringue really is a handy way to use up the egg whites leftover from making the pie filling.

At the contest, it was very hard to vote. That is the kind of problem I like.

The winner was the gracious scraper of burnt pie crust with her German chocolate mousse pie with graham cracker crust and with dark chocolate and fruit on top. The runner-up was a peanut butter mousse pie on a graham cracker crust. I voted for a buttermilk pie on the best regular pie crust ever. But first I was trying to decide between the fudge chocolate pecan pie and the coconut cream pie with nuts and stuff. There was also a pleasingly tart lemon pie.

So we had another year with no two pies alike, which continues to surprise people for some reason.

Trivia: The vote counter informed us that most of the ballots had chocolate on them.
