Tufte's Touring

Edward Tufte is coming to town and Robin and I are going to his class.
Never heard of him? Tufte (two syllables) proselytizes for good presentations, especially of complex data, and against empty and weak content. A favorite example he likes to use is Minard's graph explaining a few things about Napoleon's March on Moscow in the War of 1812. In a single picture, you can see where his army went (shown by the direction of the lines on a map, in tan on the way out and black on the way back), the size of his army over time (shown by the thickness of the lines), and, for the return trip, the temperature over time (shown in a graph below the map).
It's possible that half my readers might be interested (one of them introduced us to Tufte), so now you know about it in time to go. You may even be able to talk your employer into paying for it and not making you take vacation time.
