More of the same
Aug. 29th, 2005 11:09 pmIt's time to tie up some loose ends.
I found a yarn needle and finished making the iPod case I was working on for Robin.
I finished a draft suitable for sending out for review of the training module I was working on and am about one-third of the way through the next one.
I'm still reading Collapse. I learned that Vikings living in Greenland from 1000 to 1400 tried to keep cattle. Cattle don't like being out in the cold, so they have to be in a barn with really thick walls for nine months out of the year. And enough hay had to be harvested in the summer (and kept dry) to feed them all that time. And if that didn't last, the cattle had to be force-fed something yuckier. In the spring, when grass was ready for eating, the cows were so weakened that they had to be carried out of the barns. These guys really like their beef.
I watched "Before Sunset," the sequel to "Before Sunrise." It has one possible set of answers to the questions the first movie leaves you with. I'm afraid I'm going to buy the set. I'm not sure I actually like the characters, but I do like how they interact. They know how to communicate well. And it's interesting that they have more answers in the second movie. Much as I like movies about young people, it's fun to see what people learn as they go through more of life.
I completed the second half of the application for the job I mentioned earlier. That job closed just one week after it opened, which I think is the minimum allowed around here. That implies they had a lot of applicants, although I have seen people close jobs quickly even when they didn't have any acceptable applicants, so who knows.
Meanwhile, my boss gave a presentation on how our section uses the information from a system that is being redesigned for data entry via the web versus via the current five-part forms. Apparently people sat there with their mouths open because of all the shenanigans we go through to make our system work. Someone (who I did not plant in the audience) asked, "Who does all that?" My boss said, "Oh, Debbie does all that." Immediately after the meeting, the big boss man came to my cube and handed me five treasure bucks. So now I have some kind of goddess reputation. A big part of me thinks oh, please. I'm just doing my job. A snarky part of me thinks and that's the easy part of my job. Another part of me thinks this is good timing for pushing a re-classification through.
My teeth still feel a little weird from my cleaning at the dentist's. A little fragile. But I feel like I'm doing a good job keeping them clean.
The house is still clean. And I still haven't found that blasted check. I may have to ask for another copy. Bleh.
I still haven't done anything about joining a professional organization in online course development.
I have researched canned tuna. I have learned that one study found that albacore, aka "white" tuna, had four times as much mercury as "light" tuna, made from one or more other species. Apparently, on average tuna does not exceed the FDA's maximum mercury level, but maybe albacore alone does. The other species of tuna are smaller, so the mercury doesn't build up as much.
I've also learned that some canned tuna is "labeled as troll-caught, pole-caught or handline-caught--they are best choices because these methods have low bycatch and do not damage the environment." As an ignoramus, I like the idea of eating "troll-caught" tuna. Of course none of the tuna in my pantry mentions fishing methods, so I'm not sure if any such tuna is easily available to me.
My sister introduced me to"The Black Angel" "Dark Angel" via the first three episodes. Except for the part where she seems out of character in the first part of the third episode, I liked it.
I almost forgot to update today.
