I've decided to choose one article to translate each week from the Spanish newspaper I like. I've re-learned most of the verb forms again, so it should just be a matter of looking up a bunch of words and maybe making a few guesses. This week's article has five paragraphs plus two pictures with captions.

I generally read parts of many articles, just doing my best to tell what's going on, and that's valuable. But it's also good to dig deeper and try to figure out every word and phrase sometimes.

I chose the article on the new Town Lake Park, which opened Wednesday, the 29th, near Palmer Auditorium and the old Town Lake (now Lake Lady Bird). (Is it a lake? a lady? a bird? Usually the answer is whatever the last noun is, but not this time. At least that's only three nouns. If this becomes Lake Lady Bird Park, that will be four nouns, like Barton Creek Square Mall.) (I think Palmer has a new name, too, actually, Palmer Arts Center perhaps.)

The park has one of those fountains where jets of water come out of the sidewalk in many spots. There's one of these I love in downtown Dallas where the jets turn on and off in changing patterns, so you can have contests to see who can predict the pattern well enough to stay somewhere in the fountain the longest and still stay dry.

There's a hill with a road spiraling to the top where you get a view of downtown. And there's a big field for kite-flying and general running around. One of the pictures is an arial view showing that there is virtually no shade. The other picture shows the fountain.

I learned that "Austinite" is "austiniano" in Spanish. My favorite sentence (at least as translated by me): "'It is impossible that the children will want to go away from here,' said Stubbe while his daughter ran with another dozen children around the fountain next to the center of the park."
