This weekend we saw the movie "Waitress." This movie is about people making life decisions. The main character processes her feelings by creating new pie recipes the way poets create poems. This movie should be shown at Alamo (or another theatre with food service) with a special pie menu, where each person gets several tiny pies in all different flavors, particularly First True Love Pie (I think it was called).

There are interesting characters who don't always do what you expect. There are good guys and bad guys, but mostly just regular guys. There is humor but also obnoxiousness and sadness. The big movie-like plot turns don't seem fake.

There is no gore whatsoever, but there's some sex. I wouldn't recommend it for first-date viewing due to the subject matter--some of the life decisions involve marriage, sex, and other topics you might not want to get into right away. (If you have a choice between this movie and "Chasing Amy," however, I would recommend this movie. I think.)

There is good acting. Nathan Fillion shows that his job in "Firefly"/"Serenity" was not a fluke; he plays a different character well here. I will look for him in more movies. Keri Russell also does well here, Andy Griffith gets a fun role, director Adrienne Shelly politely takes the role of the most embarrassing main character, and the other actors are good, too, though I haven't noticed them in other roles and so can't compare.

It has some good messages. I should love it, but there are too many unpleasant scenes. And I wanted an extra scene near the end because certain people deserve to find out certain bits of news.

This is an indie movie with a limited release, so if you can't find it this week, maybe you'll find it next week, and if you don't notice it in theatres, it will be available on DVD later.

Bring a tissue. And, if you see it in Austin where it is showing only at the Arbor, bring ear plugs. (It's one of the many places that seems to cater to a nearly deaf clientele, and if that's not you, they do what they can to make it be you.)
