Today the shuttle buses weren't running so I had to take a regular bus. The last few times I tried to take the regular bus to the gym, it came very late (5:25 - 5:40). It's a pretty good bus route (#7, Duval), and buses on good routes usually run every 15 minutes during rush hour (officially). So I thought that maybe if I ran straight to the bus stop instead of changing into my gym clothes, I would catch an earlier bus and have time to change on the other end.
So my plan was to get there ASAP, and if there was no bus by 5:15, run to a nearby bathroom and change and run back.
I overheard one guy asking another guy a question about the buses and learned that they were both taking my bus, the questioner to HEB and the answerer just a few blocks further, so they were going together.
Because transportation always has to be an adventure*, there was no bus by 5:15. I ran and changed clothes. I got back, and the two guys were gone.
I asked some other people if a bus had gone by (like I didn't know) and they asked which one, then said they hadn't seen one. I said there were two guys standing there who were going to take the bus, and they were gone. They said that those guys were taking the Red River.
The Red River? There are two called Red River: the shuttle, and the #15.
Then my bus came at 5:25. Bizarrely early, and as if another bus hadn't just come.
While I was on the bus, I noticed that the #15 also goes where I was going to on a basically parallel route. Who knew the #15 went all the way to Highland Mall? When I got home, I checked the schedule. Supposedly it comes later than the #7, but from now on I'll change clothes first and then just take whichever bus comes first.
*This morning on the way to work, I came over the hill and saw a chain link fence stretching across the road I wanted to cross, and there was a long trench dug down the length of the road and workers all around. It wasn't too long to get to the closer end, but I'm not going to try that over-the-hill shortcut tomorrow.
And by the way, I am very glad to have these light and fluffy adventures. I'd much rather be annoyed or confused than traumatized.
