This weekend, starting this morning, is the annual sales tax holiday in Texas. Basically, no sales tax will be charged on clothing. The point is to help parents be able to afford to get their kids ready for school, but clothing for grown-ups will also not be taxed. (And school supplies such as paper will still be taxed.)

If you are like mac the mike, this means you absolutely do not want to go to any place like Walmart or Target all weekend because those places will be madhouses. Also, I suspect that the new outlet mall in Round Rock, which is having its grand opening this weekend, will be a nightmare.

But there are other places that sell clothing where not so many people think of going. For example, this will be an excellent weekend to visit Thrift Town. And I saw a CVS flyer advertising clothing--I doubt people will be crowding drug stores for their tax-savings extravaganzas.

Tonight, however, I am going to try braving JCPenney. The one by my house is going out of business, plus having a sale. I think it might be too crazy and I might just turn around and leave as soon as I walk in.

Robin will be off at beginner dance class, which is good because he hates JCPenney (and crowds). He feels like they sell mostly crap. I feel like he may be right, but then again, he probably hasn't even been in one for forty years; things may have changed. I just go there for underwear. It's the only place where I can find undies that are just right rather than huge things that stick out the tops of my pants or tiny things that, uh, slide out of place. Also, they have a large selection of bras, so they usually have something I like. In my size (small), you mostly get a choice between very thin cute things and padded monstrosities. I want something that is smooth and skin-toned but that does not imply that I am some other size. Who knew that these kinds of demands are almost unheard of?

There will be a new JCPenney opening way north of me (Tech Ridge) and way south, but now is still a good time to stock up. And I plan to take the opportunity to check out their other wares. For example, they have name-brand kitchen appliances (not that we need any more of those).
