Shopping: Fry's
Jan. 14th, 2006 10:44 pmI know I've been to Fry's Electronics before, but I didn't really remember it. (This is a chain located, according to their web site, mostly in California and Texas.) So today, I noticed a few more things. Also, I may have been to only a Dallas location before; the below describes the Austin location.
An image of a grand piano is an integral part of the design of the Fry's sign out front. Inside there was lovely classical piano music, played on a grand piano in store. Yes, there was a piano player in a computer store.
Also, they have more than just computer stuff. They have a large selection of DVD's. They also have large kitchen appliances. And they have a big cafe in the middle of the store, near the pianist. (Or is it a pianista, if she's female?)
I actually bought things there. They had things I never see at Half Price. So I got Appleworks 6: The Missing Manual and MacAddict's Guide to Living the iLife '05 Edition. Hmm, let's see how their prices compare to those of my favorite book sources, Amazon and AddALL:
Guide
* list: 29.99
* Fry's: 29.99
* Amazon: 19.99 (new), 12.89 (used)
* AddALL: 16.99 (cost + shipping, used)
Missing Manual
* list: 19.95
* Fry's: 17.95
* Amazon: 13.57 (new), 4.99 (used)
* AddALL: 8.20 (cost + shipping, used)
Ouch. Well, that's good to know. I don't mind paying a little extra to be able to thumb through things in the store, but I might not like paying this much extra. (And I do also like to reward Amazon for their awesome reviews. Their reviewers liked the books I chose.)
I also got the movie "Fargo," even though I only like the first half because I really, really like the first half and because it was only $7.
"Fargo"
* list: $14.99
* Fry's: $6.99
* Amazon: $9.99
It's a huge place, with a very nice selection (of DVD's and Mac books, anyway), so Deb-Bob says check it out!
