Staying Close to Home
Sep. 24th, 2005 02:34 pmI finished Anne Bartlett's Knitting: A Novel. It was definitely not boring, and hardly inundated by prose about knitting. Only one of the characters knits, in fact, although another does study it academically. This is one of those books where everyone's messed up and nobody can communicate, but people accidentally help each other sometimes and things seem to work out.
I still have that last ten pages to read on my instructional design book, so of course I went to the library today and got some nonfiction books on dogs and some fiction books with cat characters. Getting distracted by research for my novel again.
Yesterday I scored teacher certification tests. I do this partly to hang on to my math skills, but gosh I am so lame. I had to really wrack my brain to remember how to use derivatives to help me draw graphs of quadratic and cubic equations. So sad. And I still can't make myself remember the quadratic equation. I think I should add a section to my Revo (personal organizer) for formulas.
I've been wondering if we could feel the hurricane from as far away as we are. It's been pretty windy the last few days, but nothing out of the ordinary range. What's been out of the ordinary has been the temperature. It broke 100 degrees again today and yesterday. Actually, that's not unusual for Austin except that it's late September. Hot breezy feels kind of okay in the shade, but unhealthy in the sun.
In other hurricane news, we're staying out of the traffic, which has been like nonstop rush-hour traffic lately. We have lots of lovely activities at home--books, movies, music, and cooking.
