My Day

This morning I got up in plenty of time.

On the way to work I was reading a book about how to write novels. I got some ideas, or just feelings. I don't think it's helping me anymore to read about this. I should just not worry about it (except to think of more plot points) until November. This book is really big on conflict being the source of all effective writing. I'm so very glad I'm not a character in one of her books.

At work I got much closer to finishing up writing a training module on complex degree audit rule types. That was a little more exciting than it sounds (not saying much, eh?). It's starting to feel like everything is in a reasonable order with enough explanation and examples.

On the way home I started reading Jared Diamond's Collapse. A friend recommended it and it sounded interesting, even before I knew who wrote it. I enjoyed that author's Guns, Germs, and Steel and he's asking an interesting question: What makes some civilizations collapse and some not? So I have high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, he did one of those things I really hate that social scientists do all too often, and that's decide he knew the answer before he started researching the question. What's the point, then, exactly? At least he realized that his answer wasn't the only answer. He was open-minded enough not only to notice other answers but to include some of them in his book. But of course, none of those other answers are as important. Or anyway, he's not going to even discuss any fallen civilizations where his answer had no effect.

I'm going to keep reading anyway because I suspect I'll learn lots of other interesting things anyway. And perhaps he really did guess the best answer.

At home I made a smoothie supposedly for dinner and vitamins, but really to cool me off. This totally worked.

Then Robin and I watched "Before Sunset," a ten-year-old movie I'd never seen before. For me, this movie perfectly captured what happens when you meet someone who is easy and interesting and fun to talk to and when you are both attracted. Ay yi yi. And you know what? There weren't any bad guys in this movie. Very little conflict of any kind. Of course there's still bad news, though.

Quote of the day: "Everyone says humans taste like ham." I decided to add this quote because this is the only time I ever heard it. I was told to google the phrase "taste like ham." I googled "humans taste like ham," which is now on my permanent record I suppose, and there was indeed one site. A Baptist site on cannibalism. Lots more sites on "humans taste like chicken." I always thought we tasted terrible. Maybe we only smell terrible.
