I have an arbitrary goal to see at least three plays a year. It's partly to remind myself that some things are worth paying a little money for and partly because I like (non-experimental and non-half-nekkid-and-bloody) plays.

Today I have officially decided that "play" is too restrictive. I'm changing my goal to seeing three live performances a year. This year I am achieving that goal. I have already seen a radio play and an aerial dance and on Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! I am going to the next bout of the Hail Marys of the Texas Roller Girls.

Now you may not think I am the type of person to attend a roller derby, and if so you are mistaken. And that is because one of my friends has joined the team and is participating in her first bout this weekend.

Now if you think I am not the type of person to attend roller derbies (note slight difference in phraseology), I would be inclined to agree with you, but I am going to get more data on that this weekend.

All I know now is that there will be short plaid skirts, fast and interesting roller skating, and danger. My friend has been considered too nice to be allowed into the rink. Until now! She is going to kick some butt! Or elbow some ribs! Or whatever it is they do.

Hey, maybe I should read a little more about roller derbies with the help of my good friend, wikipedia.

Yeah! Helmets and knee pads!

Wow! Totally alien terms and symbols!

And, oops, elbowing of the ribs is not allowed. My friend will not be doing any of that.

Hey, this reminds of an activity I like to think of as hallway football. The players split into two teams which start at opposite ends of the hallway. Ideally there's a wooden floor in the hallway and the players are wearing socks, but no shoes.

The first person to touch the wall at the end of the hall opposite where they started wins. This results in everyone forming a giant blob of people trying to move the horde in opposite directions, sort of like a reverse tug of war. And you get the added bonus of totally socially acceptable close contact with people of the exciting gender.

Roller derby is more like two people against everyone else, and you are in roller skates instead of socks, and going in a circle instead of a straight line, and you are going in the same direction as your opponents, but it's much more high-impact because no one tries to knock you out of bounds in hallway football.

Updates:

1) Yesterday: We had two cakes anyway as well as chips and guacamole, yogurt and granola, and cheese.

2) I finally applied for that math specialist job. Yea for me! That's a big weight off my shoulders. And now that I've applied for one, it will be easier to apply for more jobs at that employer because we're allowed to copy online applications to update them for other positions.

3) The voluminous rains in my part of the country that you may have been hearing about in the news are a bit north of me.

4) I learned how to spell aerial and horde today via the magic of spell checking. (I may have to learn that again at some point.)
