I should try to make the most of this conference. I will naturally try to maximize my fun, but I should also try to maximize the potential for my getting a fun job. Here are my current plans.

1) Show up on time for the first breakfast where they organized people by geographic origin last time so I can try to meet people from my city. Last time I rushed over from the first bus out of Austin. This time I will be arriving the previous day.

2) Go to all the sessions and pay attention.

3) Talk to someone at each session and each meal. And be sure to ask them about their jobs: what they do and how they got their jobs and what they like and don't like and what they recommend for someone looking for that type of job. Last time I got the impression that most of these folks were teachers with minimal fears of technology who got suckered into distance learning. Still, they might have insights for people like me.

4) Volunteer. This is a good way to get to know people also. I did sign up to volunteer but have heard nothing. I will ask again when I register.

5) It also makes sense to do all the fun things because it's easiest to get to know people that way, but it looks like there's only one fun thing and it's going to the Kemah Boardwark. Apparently after the last hurricane, some national multi-restaurant conglomerate bought up a whole section and opened one of each of their restaurants along with some carnival rides and built a boardwalk along the river. Totally fake! I'm thinking of just going to bed early instead. On the other hand, I have liked walking around Las Vegas and Disney World which are also totally fake (though older). So I'm just going to play it by ear.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I am leaving when R. leaves for work Monday morning and should arrive around noon. Registration starts at noon, so I should probably register as so as I get in just in case they would like me to do my volunteering that day. On the other hand, all the historic buildings are open on weekdays only from noon to 4:00, so I'll wait until after that.

My only other times for sightseeing are Tuesday evening and Thursday afternoon. I'd like to wander around in historic areas--Galveston is one of the oldest cities in Texas. And somehow there are still a lot of old buildings (1800s) around in spite of hurricanes. (Galveston would have been the biggest city in Texas, but it kept being destroyed, so Houston was built further inland for safety.)

I'd also like to see if I meet some interesting travelers at the hostel. I'm getting better at knowing how to talk to complete strangers, and I will try to psych myself up to actually do a lot of it during this trip.

Then I'd like to be back home in time for dance class Thursday night at 7:30, but I'm not going to stress about it.

See Moody Gardens and while you're there, definitely do not miss the rain-forest pyramid and the scarlet ibises (inside the pyramid).

Thanks. I'll put that on my list. Those scarlet ibises (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarlet_Ibis) look pretty cool.
