Balance Exercises
Mar. 14th, 2007 06:09 pmToday I heard for the first time that one should do balancing exercises to protect and rehabilitate one's ankles, especially after one becomes forty years old. I've always thought that balance should be one of your physical goals:
* strength/speed
* coordination
* endurance/aerobic conditioning
* grace
* balance
but I've never really focused on it. In fact, of all my favorite activities, only two involve balance: ballroom dancing and walking on curbs. Oh, and I guess standing on the bed.
Apparently there are balance boards and balance balls that you can try to stand on and keep them from rolling around. And there's a whole section of Body Flow that's all about doing stuff on one foot. There are even very subtle things. Like next time you are standing, try standing with one foot in front of the other instead of having your feet side by side. If that turns out to be as easy as it sounds, try doing it while moving your head from side to side.
