Volunteers
Aug. 8th, 2005 10:03 pmI had lunch with a friend who is in the middle of training to volunteer to answer phones for a runaway hotline. I barraged her with questions. Although the job sounds scary to me, the training doesn't. They seem to realize that some people really shouldn't have to live with their parents. And the philosophy is to offer several alternatives rather than to tell callers what to do. There is also training on how to deal with repeat callers and prank callers. The trainees also get to spend some time listening in on some calls as part of their training. It seems well thought-out.
I had dinner with a friend who is keeping very busy as a volunteer treasurer for a social group. They have several events clumped together at the end of the year, plus she's been put in charge of a fund-raiser. Sounds like she's getting things under control. Fortunately she knows about delegating.
I did some volunteer web mastering today. That thing that kept breaking until I reloaded it twice broke again. So I asked if the person who sent me the PDF could send it to me in a text or word processing file. Forty minutes later I had it coded and it was 81% lighter. No longer broken, either.
Funny journal entry of the day: Hork! by Are we there yet? "One of my flaws is that I am way too damn polite. Any normal person would have run out of this place screaming when the bag o' boiled eggplant hit the microwave."
