James Joyce and Zombies

Today R. and I went to see "The Dead," a live radio broadcast of James Joyce's short story by The Violet Crown Radio Players produced in celebration of Joyce's 125th birthday at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center. So it's several actors taking turns at the microphones, but dressed in 'twenties costumes, with station breaks and fake 'twenties commercials. Also we get to see two sound guys doing very high tech things like rattling silverware against dishes during the dinner party scene.
Universities are so wacked. I love them. Did I mention this was free? (Except for the $6 parking.)
This was more like a reading than a play and thus not as fun, but I still liked it.
I haven't read any Joyce before. I was a little afraid. But R. loves Ulysses, so I recommended that we see this. This story was perfectly accessible. I caught some of the beautiful moments, but did miss one of the central themes which is how all of the characters were dead besides during the beautiful moments. I enjoyed that theme in "Shaun of the Dead," the humorous mocking zombie movie, so maybe I'll try reading this short story for myself.
