Nippiness, Nuts, and Nepal
Jan. 21st, 2007 12:31 amAlthough I was not looking forward to playing ultimate today, it wasn't that bad. I had lots of layers on, so I wasn't too cold. It didn't rain during the first game, and it was only misting during the second game; the only inconvenience was wiping off my glasses during each point.
During the first game, we were playing a team with only one woman and we had three, so each of us played only one-third of the time. This was fine with me because the field was so muddy that I couldn't run. No traction. Someone let me know that one can find cleats for only $20. I might look into that.
During the second game we were on a much better field and I could run about two-thirds of the time. That wasn't really good enough. All the people I was guarding made spectacular getaways, catches and throws, including the person I know who totally kicked my butt. She was embarrassed by one throw, but the problem was that it went to too many people, unlike my bad throws which go to invisible midgets. Multi-people throws, also called "hospital throws," are dangerous, but everyone survived.
I blocked one disk, and at least two were thrown to me, one of which I caught and successfully threw. I have decided that if I have another opportunity to block the disk, I am going to try to catch it rather than slap it down, because it's not that scary to throw it. I had plenty of good opportunities.
My team won both games. They seem to be doing a good job of not getting cocky. They do seem to follow the pattern I've noticed that teams that play better are worse at coming up with cheers. After games, it is traditional to cheer the other team. Our first team gave us the most amazing cheer, composed of several rhyming lines that were funny and almost accurate.
Afterwards, I felt good. I had used my body to its fullest, as I never do with any other activity with the possible exception of body flow classes. Now that the day is over, I still feel good. This is disturbing because if this was a pick-up game instead of a league game, I would not have gone. It's so much easier to plan your life appropriately if you actually know what you're going to enjoy.

This afternoon I went to a puzzles and games party where I helped unsuccessfully complete one puzzle (not a jigsaw puzzle, but a challenge puzzle where you try to organize various pieces according to several rules).
I also nearly became the most popular chocolatier but was foiled but then was the first to create my secret recipe and thus was able to escape the evil chocolatier and start my own company. It helped that I accidentally bought nuts first, the most difficult ingredient in our game set-up, and that my recipe didn't require very many nuts.
I also watched another game which someone won partly by planting the ingredients for bean stew several times and investing his gold in real estate.
I got to hear the following fun quotes:
"I'm going to buy some love."
"I need some stink [beans]."

Also I got to hear about someone's trip to Nepal. He went on an intense group trip involving six to eight hours of hiking each day and minimal facilities. He said it was beautiful.
I asked whether he had always wanted to go to Nepal or whether he chose this for some other reason. He admitted to choosing it because it seemed like a good way to really get away from everything that he was trying to escape. It didn't work perfectly; one of the other people had received the trip as a gift and was not prepared for such an intense and rough experience.
He brought back many cool souvenirs to give away. At first I was reluctant to take any, but then I reminded myself that it's so fun to bring back things to give away, but would be much less fun if no one took anything. I took a beautiful hunter green scarf with interesting damask patterns on it. I don't know how to wear this sort of scarf, but I'm going to put it on my dresser or the piano.
