Winter League Week #3
Jan. 6th, 2007 02:40 pmI was really dreading ultimate today. I didn't want to get up. I didn't want to get cold. I didn't want to move. I didn't want to get there and suck all over the place. Plus I read that it was going to be windy again. I went only because of my sense of honor. I promised I'd come, so I came.
But then it turned out to be kind of fun after all, and not too cold either. And there weren't many people there, either, maybe 13 or so. Someone was worried that we had only 3 women, and usually 2 have to play, but the guys all had to play 2/3 of the time too.
In the first game, no one threw to me, so I didn't have that embarrassment. We played a lot of zone because of the wind, and I was always a "wing." This doesn't require much running compared to man-on-man defense, just enough to keep warm. I also got to block a throw! It's so easy when the opponent throws it right to your stomach. For some reason I needed to use my elbow to help me block that throw, though. Ouch.
In the second game, the wind dropped down plus the other team totally played right through our zone defense so we went back to man-on-man. Someone threw it to me, but I fumbled. But then he called "Mulligan" so it worked out. (During winter league we have an extra rule about getting to re-do up to two throws per game in certain situations.)
Another exciting moment happened when a guy caught the disk at the end zone line, someone called "straddle!" and so he threw it to me and I caught it. It was later decided that his end-zone-side foot had come down first, so his catch was good for the point after all. Still, it was nice to catch one, though I juggled it around a bit first. Yeesh.
Once on my way out after a point, someone on the other team offered to give me a tip on catching. This guy is the reason we have a winter league, so he's very pro-everyone. Still, funny. I asked if he was sure he didn't want to wait until after the game. But his advice was about practicing, not playing, so it didn't matter after all. He recommended trying to catch everything with one hand while practicing in order to improve your hand-eye coordination. This in turn will help all your catches in the game (unless, of course, you forget to do two-handed catching when appropriate).
After last week, one team was undefeated and our team was tied with three others for second. We played two of those teams today. We won both games, which makes me feel uncomfortable. People have a lot more to risk by throwing the disc to me if they think we might win the tournament.
Now I feel good, much better than I did this morning, although it's hard to move. The muscles I used the most were my right gluteus maximus (buttock) muscles. I'm sure they are very important for something, much moreso than the left glutes, but I can't think when.
Favorite quote of the day: "That was pretty good for eight extra pounds of holiday cheer."
