Burnt Orange
Dec. 14th, 2006 06:38 pmYesterday I did something I've been avoiding for over twenty years. I became the owner of a burnt orange and white t-shirt. Most people naturally avoid owning burnt orange t-shirts without any effort at all, but not me.
It all started when I decided to go to grad school so I could teach college. (Ha!) I applied to three schools and was accepted to one of them. Meanwhile my best friend was moving to the same town as the college that accepted me. So, my choice was clear. Even though the school's colors were orange and white.
That summer I worked at a summer camp where I learned that the colors were actually burnt orange and white. The color of vomit against teeth. I have since learned that the team's colors were once regular orange and white, but back then regular orange dyes faded to yellow and burnt orange dyes didn't. Yellow has bad connotations.
Fortunately at graduate school, even located in a football school, you do not have to see the school colors everywhere. In fact it sometimes almost seems as if the colors are really white and navy with burnt orange trim.
Until yesterday. When I won a door prize. A t-shirt. "University of Texas at Austin. What starts here changes the world." White writing on a burnt orange shirt. My size was available. A perfectly fine shirt. Almost tasteful even.
Fortunately today I learned that a co-worker of mine has a niece who wears size small t-shirts and who "bleeds burnt orange." So I am going to use my new shirt to help her make her niece a little happier.
