Broken Air Conditioner

livingdebOur air conditioner is doing a strange little dance. It sounds like it's on, then it sounds like it's off. Then there's a thunking sound and it comes on. It sort of sounds like the furnace is coming on, too, though I can't see the flames, so maybe not. Thunk, on, off. Thunk, on, off. This can cycle as quickly as every 30 seconds.
Good thing it's 86 degrees inside today (it was cloudy today) instead of, say, 95.
Is it the AC unit outside? Doesn't look like it. The thermostat? The batteries in the thermostat? Robin's got his multimeter out. Nope, it dances with batteries that are fine.
Home Depot (seller of thermostats) closed at 10:00.
Suspense builds.
