Jane Austin Movies
Jul. 6th, 2006 10:29 pmWe've been binging on our favorite versions of Jane Austin movies lately: two versions of "Pride and Prejudice" (the Keira Knightly version and the Colin Firth version), "Sense and Sensibility" (the Emma Thompson version), and "Persuasion." (We also like "Clueless," which is sort of a re-make of Emma.)
I actually don't like most of the characters in most of these stories, but I really like some of the characters, and the main plots always get me. There's something about a culture where you must get married, and you have to pick the right person, but even more importantly, you mustn't wait too long or you're ruined, that makes the romance genre as compelling as many other thrillers, in a bizarre waiting-around-the-house sort of way. Modern romances just don't compare.
