When people asked my mom why she understood her children and children’s friends so well in high school (in the late 80’s/early 90’s) she recommended: Dead Poets’ Society, Pump Up the Volume, and Real Genius. Her emphasis was that children are sometimes wildly creative, often truly smart, and always emotionally vulnerable. And that parents needed to be honest, respectful, and nurturing even when the children weren’t following the parents’ ideal paths.
The Breakfast Club didn’t do much for my family because we didn’t identify with the characters. Same with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Cute, but mostly unrelatable. Dirty Dancing had more resonance, but definitely along older themes.
