I may have just figured out part of why I don't really like some fruits and big hunks of meat. (I prefer dairy and grains.) It's the same reason I've never liked taking pills.

At best, pills have no flavor and they must be swallowed whole. I can actually put a pill on the back of my tongue, drink an entire glass of water, and still have a pill in my mouth. Fortunately I did finally learn to swallow pills, though I still don't like the big ones.

Now, imagine a bite of steak or an orange section. Chew it up and you are rewarded with delicious flavors. Keep chewing, though, and what do you have? A tasteless, irreducible lump that has to be swallowed whole. It's like chewing gum, only you have to swallow it afterwards.

That just doesn't happen with bread or pasta or cheese or chocolate. Those foods either melt away or get broken up into ever tinier pieces.

So there you have it: the bizarre truth behind why I prefer overly processed foods, even more so than the average American, who already has extreme tastes.
