Last week, I have been on an ice cream diet. Here's how it works:

Have small breakfast.
Have a small snack.
Have a small lunch.
Have a small snack.
Have a reasonable dinner.
Have a small bowl of ice cream.
Have another small bowl of ice cream.
Perhaps have another small bowl of ice cream.

See, all day if I don't eat anything evil, I may have ice cream after dinner. And if I do have some other sort of dessert (like those two donuts that one day), then I don't get ice cream.

For me, it doesn't work just to have one big bowl of ice cream, because I still want a little more after I'm done.

It all started when someone said I simply must try HEB's Creamy Creations Poteet Strawberry Ice Cream. This is some sort of dreamy ice cream with real strawberries mixed into regular ice cream. It's only available during strawberry season. And it's only available in the half-gallon size and the full-fat version. I almost resisted. But then I didn't.

The strawberries are cut up into small enough pieces that they are easy to eat while frozen. And when I tasted it, I thought, "That's kind of good." And when I finished a bowl, I thought, "Hmm, I think I'd like a little more."

Poteet strawberry ice cream

I googled Poteet strawberries and it turns out that Poteet is a small town in Texas that's south of San Antonio. I'd never heard of it. They have a strawberry festival each April, so apparently strawberry season lasts from April to at least July. And they have a lot of monuments to strawberries. For example, the top of their water tower is painted to look like a strawberry.

Does this diet work? My data from one week says yes. But as you know, a single week of this sort of data is not trustworthy.

I always have vanilla ice cream in the freezer. And that ice cream tastes just as good as this strawberry flavor. But I always forget that, and I always think to myself that I can have ice cream anytime, so I don't have to have it now. With this ice cream, it's a second container, hogging more than my fair share of freezer space. I don't know why this happened exactly, but it's been fun.

We use custard cups for ice cream so the bowl can't possibly hold more than 4 oz. When you have a second bowl you can still feel all virtuous. There is an actual ice cream diet listed in the Gilligan's Island Cook book. I think you get ice cream three times a day and . . . I'll go get it out of the cupboard. Wow, I opened it to the right page. The diet is: two scoops for breakfast, two scoops for lunch, two scoops for dinner and one scoop in between. The cookbook is by Dawn Wells who played Mary Ann. She says they would lose about five pounds in a week, since it ends up being 900 calories a day. If you have the cookbook the inset is on page 213 between "Rango Rango Mango Ice Cream" and "Thurston's Denver Mint Ice Cream".

HEB does have some really nice seasonal flavors. But be careful you don't fall in love without stocking up; if you like a flavor, buy enough to either get you sick of it or to last a while. We have liked Key Lime Pie (summer 2007 and again now, 2008) and Pumpkin (fall 2007 - and this was such a tease as they only had it once or twice and then were out of stock, chronically, but still kept a space labeled in the freezer...whaa!). I didn't actually like the Poteet Strawberry, but then I'm not into fruity ice cream. I don't like frozen fruit bits. I'm also partial to Breyer's French Vanilla.

It's funny that you learned about Poteet via the ice cream flavor. Same here, looked it up after seeing the ice cream at HEB. A guy who works at the hospital lives in Poteet, and the strawberry festival is apparently a big deal.

Ooh, custard cups! That would have made a better picture, too, because ours are cobalt blue.

That cookbook sounds scary!

I don't worry about falling in love with flavors that won't be available later. My favorites are various dark chocolates, which are always available. Plus there are always plenty of desserts I like.

I haven't tasted the pumpkin ice cream, but if you are in mood for that, you might like this sweet potato milkshake I make. I can't remember the quantities any more, but into a blender you put in a few pieces of canned sweet potatoes, some ice cream, some sugar, some cinnamon, half as much ginger as cinnamon, half as much cloves as ginger, and milk. Blend until smooth, and it tastes surprisingly like pumpkin pie.

Yum! Thanks for the recipe - I'll have to try that, and I know A would love it...

I got it as a gift from a friend who loved Gilligan's Island and the cookbook is really good. I made one of the coconut pie recipes in it once and I was really impressed with the outcome. It has a lot of polynesian recipes in it that Dawn Wells collected after she did the show.
