Today we took a train trip on the Hill Country Flyer. I've decided I'd like to do at least one local touristy thing each year that I've never done before, and this is it for 2007. Robin loves trains and has always wanted to take this train ride. And our friend C made reservations for this several months ago with us and fourteen others of her closest friends (more if I'm forgetting someone).

The big draw is the steam engine which is out for repairs right now, as it has been since 1999. Actually, it worked just fine, but there was a worrying crack. It will be back after well under a decade of work. And meanwhile, chances of the engine exploding are rather smaller than they would have been behind a cracked steam engine.

The other cars are also from ancient times. We didn't sit in coach but got a lounge car. Here's the outside of our car:

The train started just as smoothly as trains in Europe, though it didn't stay so smooth throughout.

The ride also included plenty of old-timers and other volunteers to help you learn about trains and the hill country. (Suspense builds: this entry is the first part of a three-part series.)
