A to Z Challenge: Honor Societies
Apr. 9th, 2015 10:29 amSince I got an A in my Spanish I class, I've gotten some odd invitations.
First there's the Nu Sigma chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma, the National Collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society. Because I completed Spanish I with an A and currently have an A in Spanish II, I qualify to be an Associate Member. This allows me to pay $2 for a certificate. If I get an A this semester and in Spanish III or IV as well and keep an overall GPA of at least 3.0, I'll qualify to be a Full Member. This means I can pay $35 for a lifetime membership, certificate, pin, and initiation ceremony.
Our teacher handed out the information, emphasizing that we could put this on our resume forever. The students asked her whether there are meetings or conventions or anything. She doesn't know.
Apparently there are sometimes conventions. I'm not sure what the goal is. It's for people who love languages, but we are not all learning the same language(s). Maybe it's about sharing learning strategies? I am happy just looking for those online.
(Speaking of looking online, I found the pin to be ugly.)
Then there's the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. To qualify, I need to be a first- or second-year undergraduate with at least a 3.4 GPA. Oops, I'm more of a sixth-year undergraduate if you add up all my undergraduate credits. I can become a lifetime member for $95. Then I can put that on my resumes and grad school applications and get a Membership Diploma and a press release for me to send to news media in my home area. My parents will be so proud! Even without making a payment, I got a Certificate of Nomination and a decal.
I can't tell if these guys have meetings or not. They do have some scholarships you can try for, and you can also get discounts of some kind.
I would blame this on the I'm-Special generation, but we had at least one of these when I was in high school in college where you pay an organization money to put your name in a book.
