The three challenges from episode 2 were:
* to make a pair of trousers from a pattern (in only 4 hours?!)
* to add patch pockets to a ready-made skirt (a grey wool a-line mini skirt), and
* to tailor a perfectly fitting silky blouse (from a "delicate silk or satin")

Here are some of the topics covered:
* that men's trousers have a seam in the back of the waistband to make it easier to change the fit
* an awesome tutorial on how to approach sewing a fly over your zipper
* apparently zippers are called zips in England
* press darts as you go along for a smoother finish
* tailoring used to require a lot of strength because irons used to be very heavy and you do a lot of work with irons
* how to put one pant leg inside the other in preparation for sewing the crotch seam--we see Lauren figure it out well enough that we can copy her
* the diagonal stretch that makes bias binding work so well can be troublesome for different uses
* how to make a gathered pocket
* what topstitching is
* what a peplum is - a frilly skirt-like bit attached at the waistline of a blouse
* what a rolled hem is--and yes, I do see these on silk scarves--they don't say it, but it's good for sheer things where you don't want the hem to be too noticeable from either side

The how-to lesson was on making a "tie-sided cushion," what looks like a lined pillowcase with two ties on top to hold the pillow in.

The history lesson (minutes 13:09 - 16:15) was on Beau Brummel (who most Georgette Heyer fans will have heard of) "who wanted to put the masculinity into menswear." Today's trousers have changed very little since his designs from 200 years ago.

I didn't like the preview/spoilers at the beginning of this episode--I recommend starting at 2:10. And I stopped watching when the preview of the next episode started.

When I saw that skirt, I could not imagine how patch pockets could possibly make it better. But some of them were actually still okay.

I was very glad to see Mark get an assignment that was inside his comfort zone--he got to do a period shirt for the silky-blouse assignment. Now all that's left is some sort of home decor sewing for Stuart.

I was sad to see that the gal who got sick in the first episode did not make it back--they didn't even mention her (that I noticed).

I'll just give you my favorite quote today:

"I'm actually pleased that it's a pair of trousers ... because I've always wanted to make a pair of trousers and I've always been terrified of doing it. ... I mean really, to have a Saville Row tailor look at trousers that I've made tell me where I can make improvements." - Stuart

Oh, I love that attitude!

I really enjoyed all the problem solving in this episode. The best one was checking out all the men's trousers in the room to confirm whether there really is a seam in the back of the waistband.

The worst parts were the glum looks on people who had not been able to perform up to standard in various ways. And of course they kicked two people off the show (who were not at all sick).
