A Facebook friend asked people to post their obscure childhood awards. That made me go to my envelopes of certificates and stuff. I didn't find anything too obscure sounding, but I posted that I had won the "Daring Detective" award for reading 12 books in one summer and the "Smart Cookie" award for selling Girl Scout cookies.

Most Fun

* Daring Detective Club (sponsored by McDonald's) - We got a detective ID card. And for every three books we read, we got a stamp in our card. And for every stamp on our card, we got a reward at McDonald's (like free fries).

Most Over-the-Top

* Certified Whale Watcher - I did see some whales on that boat ride. I also learned that I am susceptible to motion sickness.

Most Unappreciated at the Time

* Fourth Place (out of four), high school science fair, Behavioral Social Science Division - I was later told that although traditionally awards are given for first through sixth place, they don't have to give all those awards, even if there are enough entries.

Awards I Never Would Have Guessed I'd Receive

* Lanier Jr. High Physical Education Award (informally called "a letter" even though it was shaped like a shield rather than a letter) - I got this for being on the best team in PE class that semester. That team had the fewest people in it when I moved there, so the teacher added me--I didn't help them win games but I did help win other points by running as many laps at the end of class as I could and by always dressing out properly in the gym uniform--even though it was easy to put on the snap-up shirt inside-out when the lights were out in the dressing room.)

* Second Place, 880-yard run (4th period PE class) - because we picked three events, and most of my classmates chose not to pick the "longer" races!

* Archer (Camp Archery Association) - for scoring 100 points shooting 30 arrows at 30 yards

* 99 percentile in all three areas of the National Teacher Exam (Communication Skills, General Knowledge, and Professional Knowlege) - I still couldn't get hired.

* Certificate of Recognition for participating in Crested Butte Mountain Resort's Learn to Ski Program - I really did learn to ski, unlike the first time I went skiing.

* First Place, Division B Mambo - I'm not sure what Division B was--after the first dance, they'd split us into Divisions A and B. So maybe Division B was the loser division that didn't make it to Division A, or maybe it was for people who only did lower-level moves, regardless of technique. Regardless, with mambo, just staying on the beat puts you at a great advantage at that level, and we stayed on the beat because my partner wouldn't let me drag him off it like I kept trying to.

* National Novel Writing Month Winner - for having written a 50,000-word "novel"

**

In other news, I feel like I've spent most of the day coughing and napping. I also got some reading in. No job news from any front.
