This year we saw a morning IMAX movie and it was pretty empty in there, so I think that would be a great July 4 tradition.

"Flying Monsters 3D," about the evolution of pterosaurs, was a fabulous movie except that it shouldn't have been in 3D. Robin says the visuals got better about halfway through the movie, but I thought they were pretty bad throughout, especially away from the center of the screen. If I want double vision, I'll take the glasses off!

Otherwise, awesome. It's mostly artists' renditions of what these flying reptiles might have been like, though we did see a few actual fossils. I got a really good feel for how they might have flown. Kind of a cross between flying squirrels and birds. Plus some of them were some pretty alien-looking beings, so that was cool.

In other news we ate out, took a nap, did some chores (Robin removed a flat tire; I did dishes and trimmed my hair), made food for a pot-luck but didn't go, ate some of the potluck food for dinner, and are now working on "Veronica Mars" episodes. Just learned about that TV show at chikuru's and raaga123's beginning of summer party when one partygoer asked another about his Mars Investigations t-shirt.

Monevator's Asset Allocation Strategy - What We Can Learn from Rules of Thumb - If this sounds boring, at least check out the names he made up for the various rules of thumb on how much of your portfolio you should have in stocks versus bonds.

From "The Larry Swedroe ‘NOOOOOOOO!’ rule of thumb" - "I’m always amazed by the number of people who believe that their investments should never go down. It’s a valuable exercise therefore to be confronted with the idea that you are likely to be faced with a 30% plus market bloodbath on more than one occasion over your investment lifetime."

This is a really good (and easy to read) overview of the issues and has several things I've never seen before, even though diversification is my main path to risk reduction, so you'd think I would have heard of all of these by now.

I like the way this one messes with the gender stereotypes. It's got bugs on it but also pink and purple and curlicues.
